Following their respective derby defeats over the weekend, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur will square off in a Premier League battle of the titans on Thursday night at the Etihad. The Lilywhites were heavily thrashed by North London rivals Arsenal (2-0), while Pep Guardiola’s team suffered a setback against Manchester United (2-1).

On February 19, 2022, Tottenham blew the Premier League title race open with a 3-2 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, which gave them the hopes of reaching the top four a vital shot in the arm, which they did. The now-fit Dejan Kulusevski fired Tottenham ahead in that game, only to be pegged back by Ilkay Gundogan. Harry Kane restored Tottenham’s lead and then had a goal disallowed by VAR. Man City were also awarded a penalty by VAR in the dying minutes following a handball by World Cup winner Cristian Romero, which was dispatched by Riyad Mahrez. However, Kane won the game for Antonio Conte’s side with a precise header even deeper into stoppage time.

It is true that Tottenham won both of their games against Man City at the Etihad Stadium, 3-2, in the Premier League last season. To firmly support the North Londoners in repeating recent history, though, would require courage.

Only the following opponents, Manchester City and Arsenal, can now compete for the title, according to disgruntled Tottenham manager Antonio Conte, who had no complaints following his team’s fully deserved loss to the Gunners in the North London derby on Sunday evening.

Contrarily, Conte’s team has scored three goals in their last nine away Premier League games, and Tottenham overcoming Guardiola is nothing new. Their performance of only three victories in their previous nine Premier League matches is hardly that of a top-four contender.

Nonetheless, Tottenham must start on the front foot if they want to get any positive result from this match.
