Rabiu Kwankwaso Borrowed N4.1 Billion as Governor, Against His Non-Borrowing Claims – Fact Checkers

As Nigerians prepare for the forthcoming presidential election, candidates of various political parties have been using their past records and achievements when they were previously in public office to woo voters to their side. However, a group of fact-checkers has always tried to know the truth of their claims by getting their statement fact-checked.

However, it will be of note that during the presidential town hall meeting, the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, claimed that during his tenure as the governor of Kano State, he never borrowed money to carry out his numerous projects. However, the fact-checkers had countered Kwankwaso’s claim by indicating that he borrowed the sum of N4.10 billion and was also investigated by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission for the mismanagement of the pension fund.

It reads, “NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso’s claim that he never borrowed money when he was governor of Kano is incorrect.” Multiple media reports confirmed that Kwankwaso borrowed N4.1 billion from pensioners’ funds to build Bandirawo and Amana Housing Estate. In the Vanguard report in 2021, the former Kano governor was probed by the EFCC for allegedly mismanaging N10B pension remittance between 2011 and 2015.
