The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmud Yakubu has revealed that the commission through the time table of Kogi and Bayelsa governorship elections saved Nigeria over N500million.
The electoral umpire fixed the two elections for November 16 with the INEC boss disclosing that the move saved Nigeria millions in running cost.
He noted that the conduct of the Kogi West election between Sen Smart Adeyemi and Sen Dino Melaye on the same day will also help cut the cost down.
He said: “Because we have been trying to avoid the pressure we have with timelines, we were served court orders that appeal tribunal nullifying the election in Kogi west senatorial district and by coincidence, it coincides with the governorship election in Kogi state, therefore we had to combine the two elections.
“As a result of that position we have taken, we have saved over N300 million that we would have spent if the election were to hold as a stand-alone.
“Now, it will cost less than N10 million because we have combined that election. Also in Bayelsa state, we have a supplementary election in Brass local government area.
“We would have concluded way back in March that it begin a subject of protracted litigation over six polling units. We are combining it with the governorship election as well. It is going to cost next to nothing.”
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC, Kabiru Gaya commended Mahmud saying: “What you have done is commendable. You have saved the government over N500 million if you put together the cost. I think it is a good idea so keep it up.”
