Declare State Of Emergency In Imo, PDP Tells buhari

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chapter in Imo State has requested that President Muhammadu buhari proclaim a state of emergency in the State due to the current level of insecurity.

At a news conference on Wednesday in Owerri, the state capital, Chief Charles Ugwu, the opposition party’s State Chairman, made the call in his capacity as the party’s Secretary.

The party argued that President buhari should swiftly declare a state of emergency if insecurity in Imo State continues.

As responsible and patriotic stakeholders in Imo State, we can no longer continue to live in denial of the fact that Imo is a special conflict state that demands imaginative and responsive intervention to handle, the PDP decried the recent attacks on Imo people, including party members.

The State Government, led by Senator Hope Uzodinma, has a primary responsibility to protect lives and property, but the party continued, “The tragic irony in all of this is that the State Government is not only incapable of securing the state, but also appears complicit in the escalation of insecurity. In fact, the Imo State APC government is largely viewed as a facilitator of terrorism against perceived enemies and political rivals.

The PDP’s state chairman claimed that the party’s candidates had received warnings not to organize or participate in any political events, saying that “our candidates for the elections, leaders and stakeholders of our party are being warned and threatened by unidentified persons to stop all forms of political activities or face unpleasant consequences.” This is a result of the governor’s ongoing concern over why opponents are not being attacked by masked gunmen. Our campaign rally in Ahiazu Mbaise on January 14, 2023, had late gunmen visits in response to these threats, and it almost resulted in a terrible catastrophe but for Providential intervention.

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) spokesperson and PDP candidate for the Ideato federal constituency election, Ikenga Ugochinyere, was attacked last Saturday in Akokwa, Ideato North local government area of the State. The party urged Governor Hope Uzodinma to back up his explanations for why the attack occurred with evidence.

“Senator Hope Uzodinma should release the agreement and the names of the unknown gunmen to security agencies for arrest and immediate prosecution,” the PDP continued. “He claims to be aware of the agreement between Ikenga Ugochinyere and the unknown gunmen.

The opposition party also requested that the National Security Advisor (NSA), Director of the DSS, and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) change the “entire security architecture and security personnel sent to Imo State with a view to confronting the festering insecurity in the State.”

The PDP reiterated its demand that the Ebubeagu security outfit be immediately disbanded, saying: “It is worrisome that Ebubeagu, which currently appears to be positioned as a hit-squad under the DSS, represents a worse nightmare to the people of Imo State, than the organized network of bandits and kidnappers it was established to confront. In fact, there has been a rise in instability to unprecedented and unbearable heights since the deployment of Ebubeagu against separatist organizations and agitators, which has been marked by a vicious circle of extrajudicial killings and retaliation attacks.

The party also demanded that all security personnel connected to Governor Uzodimma’s Special Adviser, Mr. Chinasa Nwaneri, be removed because he is not entitled to such, in light of reported evidence of his threats to Mr. Ugochinyere before to the most recent attack on the latter’s residence.
