Coronavirus: Lagos govt announces closure of schools in the state

As part of the preventive measures against the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Lagos State Government has announced that all schools; including public and private schools should be closed down from Monday, March 23, 2020.

According to a statement that the Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo signed, the move became necessary to prevent children; and their teachers from getting more vulnerable to the pandemic.

“It is important for parents to ensure that their children practise ‘social distancing’ while at home; wash their hands regularly or use hand sanitisers and observe high standards of personal hygiene. Parents and guardians should encourage children to remain at home.

“The closure do not intend to create panic but to arrest the spread of the disease; which has become a global threat,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, despite the threat posed by the virulence of the novel coronavirus in Nigeria, 1st News reported that pupils of an unidentified elementary school; were sighted at the Murtala Muhammed Airport embarking on an excursion.

This incident which was recorded in a now-viral video was posted on social media on Wednesday, March 18; which is probably when the incident happened.

In the video, the pupils can be seen walking in a military-like formation; with their hands on the shoulders of their colleague in-front.

The Lagos State Ministry of Education has yet to comment on this situation; neither has it mandated any closure of the school term due to the novel coronavirus.
