Coronavirus: AMVCA attendees exposed to confirmed case, urged to self-isolate

The Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Prof. Akin Abayomi; has disclosed that attendees at the recently concluded African Magic Viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA); held at Eko Hotel and Suites on March 14, 2020 have been exposed to the dreaded coronavirus.

Prof. Abayomi revealed that one of the attendees at the event has tested positive to the coronavirus.

This was disclosed on his official handle on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, on Tuesday. March 23, 2020.

He wrote: #COVID19 Lagos Alert! I hereby notify you that all participants at the African Magic viewers’ Choice Award (AMVCA) held on 14th March at @EkoHotels may have come in contact with one of the confirmed cases in Lagos and are most likely to have been exposed to #COVID19 Infection.’’


Consequently, he has asked all attendees at the event to proceed on strict self-isolation. Further, attendees were urged to call the COVID-19 toll free line if they notice any symptoms of the coronavirus.


Indeed, there have been rumours that one of the attendees at the recently held AMVCA; had been suspected of showing symptoms of the coronavirus pandemic. As a matter of fact, the undisclosed person was said to have flown into Nigeria to attend the AMVCA from one of the high-burden countries. Also, feelers indicate that the suspected case had initially refused to submit to examination.

Equally important, a number of notable Nigerian celebrities were present at the 7th edition of the AMVCA.

Nigeria has been battling to rein in the dreaded coronavirus after an undisclosed Italian became the country’s index case.


Meanwhile, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Tuesday, March 24; confirmed two new cases of the novel coronavirus in the country, bringing the total number to 42.

The two cases are located in Lagos and also Ogun states.

“One case is a returning traveler. The second case is a contact of a previously confirmed case,” NCDC said.

The NCDC added via a tweet that as at 1 pm on March 24; there are 42 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Nigeria; with discharged as well as one death recorded.

The tweet read: “2 new cases of COVID19 have been confirmed in Nigeria. One is in Lagos State & one in Ogun. One case is a returning traveler.

“The second case is the contact of a previously confirmed case As at 1 pm on March 24, there are 42 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in Nigeria-2 discharged, 1 death.”
