The Ogun State Police Command yesterday said it has arrested 18 suspected criminals, including an alleged serial burglar, Onyebuchi Chika.
It also said several stolen items, weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, assorted charms and other exhibits were recovered during raids of criminal hideouts and black spots in some parts of the state.
A statement issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the arrested burglar had allegedly been the brain behind many cases of burglary and stealing in Awa Ijebu and its environs. Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, disclosed that the suspect was nabbed in the early hours of Saturday.
According to him, students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, residing in the community have always been Chika’s target.
The PPRO said, “The suspect, who was arrested in the early hours of today (Saturday), has been terrorising the area for quite some time now.
“Recovered from him are a sowing machine, two mattresses, cooking gas and some burglary instruments.
On interrogation, he confessed being a serial burglar and that the students of Olabisi Onabanjo University residing in the community are always his target.”
Oyeyemi also revealed that policemen attached to Itele Ota division, in their efforts to rid the area of crime and criminality, carried out raids of criminal hideouts and black spots in Ayetoro area of Itele and arrested 17 suspected criminals.
Recovered from them, according to him, are bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, assorted charms, eight motorcycles, one generator, nine different GSM phones and the sum of N123,000.
He said the Police Commissioner, Ahmed Iliyasu, had ordered the immediate transfer of the two cases to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
